Design & Construction Series – Energy Savings through Integrated Design

Integrated design is a necessary component of any successful green building project, particularly in the health care setting. This webinar will specifically address the integrated design process from the perspective of opportunities to reduce energy use. The Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Program will present case studies about how integrated design can reduce energy needs in hospitals. A second presentation will review the role of integrated design in calculating lifecycle savings associated with energy efficiency strategies.

Since Shanti joined NREL in 2002, he has worked with the High Performance Building Team specializing in commercial building energy systems. He has facilitated many Integrated Design process needed to realize low and zero energy commercial buildings. He provided the modeling support for the K-12 Advanced Energy Design Guide. Shanti is currently providing energy efficiency technical support for various zero energy building and research projects, including the commercial and public building projects in Greensburg, Kansas, the Quick Start New Orleans School district, and leading the development of a Small Hospital Advanced Energy Design Guide for 30% savings. He also provides integrated design and technical assistance to DOE’s EnergySmart Hospitals Program.

Tyler Krehlik, AIA, LEED AP is an Associate Principal and the Committee Chair for Sustainability at Anshen+Allen Architects. His roles have included planning and design for a wide range of large-scale research and healthcare projects. He oversees all sustainable design project initiatives at Anshen+Allen including 13 projects registered with LEED and GGHC. He is the Project Architect and Sustainability Leader for the UCSF Mission Bay Hospital project. Under his educational direction, 25% of Anshen+Allen’s staff have become LEED Accredited. He has taught and spoken on the concepts of sustainability and evidence based design and is an active member of the AIA San Francisco Committee on the Environment and the United States Green Building Council Northern California Council.
