Topic

Millions of square feet of hospital floors are covered with resilient flooring materials. As more information becomes available about the health and environmental concerns associated with vinyl (or PVC), health care organizations are researching and beginning to purchase alternative products that meet the high performance needs of hospitals and medical office buildings. This presentation will provide an overview from the Healthy Building Network (HBN) of the health and environmental attributes of alternative resilient flooring materials. Kaiser Permanente and Hackensack University Medical Center, both health care systems that have sourced the alternatives, will share their experiences with installation and maintenance of the newer products. Lastly, they will talk about the intangible benefits that have come from using the alternative products.

Objectives

  • Understand the human and environmental health issues with resilient flooring materials used in health care, including vinyl, synthetic rubber, natural rubber, linoleum, and surlyn
  • Identify the installation and maintenance issues associated with some of the alternatives
  • Learn about some of the benefits in sourcing these materials from a marketing, workplace safety, and educational perspective

    Julie Silas, Director of Health Care Projects, works with leading health care systems throughout the country to assist them in sourcing green building materials, facilitates the Global Health and Safety Initiative’s Materials subcommittee, and undertakes market and technical research to address the environmental and human health effects of building materials. She joined Healthy Building Network in 2007 after serving for many years as the Program Director for SF Bay Area Physicians for Social Responsibility where she also earned high regard as an expert in the field of environmental health and environmentally preferable purchasing criteria. She was formally a Steering Committee member of Health Care Without Harm and co-chair of their Safer Materials workgroup.

    Suzen L. Heeley is the director of Design + Construction at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC). She has been a contract interior designer for over 20 years, and has dedicated her career at HUMC for the past 14 years. Ms. Heeley is responsible for all design, construction, and renovation projects at HUMC. Her past works include healthcare, environmental, corporate, restaurant, retail, and exhibit design for Fortune 500 companies, healthcare systems, and the contract interior design market. As an advocate in healthcare and environmental design organizations, Ms. Heeley, a LEED Accredited Professional, promotes environmentally responsible, supportive healthcare design to enhance the overall patient and family experience.

    Norma Lynn Roles, IIDA, is a lead for interior and furniture standards for Kaiser Permanente’s National Facilities Services department. She is responsible for developing standards and sourcing for both resilient flooring and carpeting, and providing support for KP’s capital project teams and their design consultants. Norma is also involved with an intradepartmental/intra-regional ergonomics committee that focuses on best practice in facility design for improved workplace safety. Norma has an Associate’s degree from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandizing in Interior Design. Her experience spans 22 years in the commercial interiors arena, with the last 12 focused on healthcare. Norma joined Kaiser in 2005.
