Authors of the newly released ASHRAE publication titled Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities will present an overview of the Guide. The Guide is the sixth in a series to provide recommendations for achieving 30% energy savings over the minimum code requirements. The energy savings target of 30% is the first step in reducing building energy use. This Guide focuses on small healthcare facilities up to 90,000 ft2 in size including acute care facilities, outpatient surgery centers, and small critical access and inpatient community hospitals. These buildings have a wide variety of heating and air-conditioning equipment, which is reflected in the recommendations contained in this Guide. There is also extensive information about building envelope, daylighting and lighting systems, all important energy-saving systems.

Objectives

  • Learn how to achieve advanced levels of energy savings without having to resort to detailed calculations or analyses. Energy-saving recommendations for each of the eight U.S. climate zones are summarized in a single table, thus facilitating the Guide’s use.
  • Learn some of the “How to” tips that will help a project team successfully deliver the energy saving facility.
  • Review examples of various case studies that illustrate the recommendations and demonstrate the flexibility offered in achieving the advanced energy-savings provided within the Guide.
  • Learn about additional recommendations opportunities to incorporate greater than 30% energy savings into the design of the building.

    Since Shanti joined NREL in 2000, he has worked with the Commercial Building Research Group with a focus on applied research and design processes for commercial building energy efficiency and building integrated renewable energy. This work has included facilitating numerous integrated design processes needed to realize low and zero energy commercial buildings. He has been responsible for the post occupancy energy performance evaluation of several high profile, low-energy commercial buildings. He has worked with AIA, USGBC, ASHRAE, IES, and DOE to provide development and modeling support for the K-12 Advanced Energy Design Guide, as well as serving as project committee chair for the Small Hospital and Healthcare Facilities Advanced Energy Design Guide. His recent research has focused on developing a classification and energy optimization modeling system for zero energy buildings. Additional work has focused on developing a large hospital energy efficiency design guide.

    Recent applied research work has focused on providing energy efficiency technical support for various zero energy building and research projects, including many of the 50% savings commercial and public building projects in Greensburg, Kansas, the Quick Start New Orleans School district, and various large retail national account partners. He also provides integrated design and technical assistance to DOE’s EnergySmart Hospitals Program and Hospital Energy Alliance.

    Mike Meteyer has specialized in the planning and design of healthcare mechanical systems since 1989. He joined Erdman in 1992 and now provides the leadership for the Mechanical Engineering and Sustainable Design disciplines. This includes the development of personnel and design procedures. His experience spans many types of healthcare facilities including hospitals, ambulatory care centers, specialty clinics, medical office buildings, and wellness centers. Mike’s participation in ASHE and ASHRAE brings best practices and innovation to all Erdman projects.

    Mr. Gill is a Principal with CRS Engineering & Design Consultants, a multi-discipline consulting engineering firm based in Birmingham, Alabama. He serves as Director of Lighting Design Services, managing all aspects of professional design practice of the Lighting Design group for a variety of projects types including healthcare, commercial office, judicial and institutional, houses of worship, and education buildings.

    Mr. Gill is a Registered Professional Engineer (Building Architectural Engineering), certified by the National Council of Qualifications for Lighting Professionals (NCQLP), and is a LEED Accredited Professional for Building Design & Construction by the USGBC/GBCI.

    Along with serving on the ASHRAE project committee for the Advanced Energy Design Guide for Smlaa Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities, he is a previous Chair of the Healthcare Facilities Committee of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA).

    Bernard Cole, Intl. Assoc AIA, LEED AP is a building performance and design professional who’s work is significantly content-driven and inspired by energy and environmental performance criteria. His performance driven design approach centers around daylighting, recovery and decoupled ventilation principles, and is aimed at achieving excellent building health and comfort while paving the way to carbon neutrality.
